Whats Better For You? Linux or Window

One of the hardest decisions to make when starting a web hosting business is whether to use Linux or windows. There are a few options available, however the most widely known platforms are Linux and Windows.

You will find a lot of information on Linux and windows platforms however these are usually written by employees by their respective company. Through a few hours of search engine based research, it becomes apparent that there really isn’t a more worthy or beneficial platform to use.

It doesn’t matter which one you choose to use, as it does not make as much of an effect as other bigger decisions you will make. Microsoft designed and formulated the windows operating system.

Linux however is unrestricted and is often found at a very cheap or even free.

While the initial cost of the Linux program works out to be less, the Windows platform, in turn, is less costly to execute. Although the Windows program maybe more costly to begin with it works out less costly to execute then Linux.

Windows and Linux platforms after all cost have been taken into consideration are almost the exact same price.

Often times, this is only due to the fact that their personal computer runs on Windows, so they tend to be familiar with the company.

A lot of people prefer the windows server simply because they are family with the windows operating system. This is simply a matter of personal opinion and is not a fact by any means.

The connection to your Internet account will likely be via ftp or a control panel, and both Linux and windows servers have these available. The most known difference between Linux and windows is the file transfer instructions.

These instructions are different using Linux and sometimes lead to an error with the computer. While this can be a pain at times, it doesn’t happen very often to make much of a difference.

The reliability of both programs has been argued about several times in recent years.

The major discredit against Windows is that is considered to be unsafe, due to the amount of faults that have been discovered. The fact of the matter is that because it is the most widely practiced system for household personal computers, many people spend countless hours searching for faults in the program.

Since Linux is not as popular as windows it has had less errors reported then the windows Platform. However, as Linux tends to be the more common host type, it has a higher rate of viruses and or hack attacks that have been implemented onto the system. In the end, it is not simply a matter of which platform is safer or more reliable.

The stability of your hosting program while rely mostly on the abilities and security provided by the technical executives employed by your web hosting company. Windows and Linux platforms are almost the same in costs and both have security problems.

If you have a major concern when it comes to security, then it is most important for you ensure that your hosting firm is experienced and respected throughout the Internet community.

Web Hosting for Windows

Building a website can be a very technical endeavor. Until now most people shied away from building a webpage because it seemed like a strange uninviting land. More and more web hosts are aware of the general population, and small businesses desire to have their own website, in fact in some cases need their own site, and are making programs available to the less technically inclined. There are several operating systems most often used in website design. These are Microsoft Windows, and Linux, with UNIX and Macintosh also common, but not as often used.

The Microsoft product ‘Windows’ is among the most popular operating systems in the world today. It is the standard most personal computers come equipped with, and the system the average person is most likely to be familiar with both at home, and at work. In the past many technical operations were solely based on Linux systems and required great technical skills that were beyond the scope of many individuals. With the advanced popularity and need for websites scripts and software programs began to be developed for use with Microsoft Windows and made to be understandable by the average person. Windows allows for a vast array of scripting languages to support the desired website functions that are most popular today.

If a website has to be hosted, that would incorporate the use of Microsoft products, it is always advisable to use Windows as a platform. Microsoft, windows feature an effective Internet Information Server (IIS). Whenever the hosting is based on ASP and Microsoft Access and SQL server, use of IIS is recommended or rather is needed. There are several components used for web hosting like that of CGI. Use of these components can be best experienced if the website is hosted on Windows. Windows web hosting also has a lot of pre-made programs designed for use with Windows web servers.

Windows vs UNIX

Windows and UNIX websites can be accessed internationally by everybody. The main difference exists in the software provided to the host servers data. Windows most always provides the best software and services in all of its purposes. It is a very reliable operating system and its programs are effective and functional but UNIX remains a little ahead in these areas due to increased stability and the ability to run long periods of time without rebooting. At the same time, in the modern world Windows meets the needs of its users better than UNIX.

Wherever Microsoft products are in service a Windows operating system must be used. If the host uses MS Access, ASP in order to provide dynamic content, or VBScript to give enhanced features to the sites then UNIX is not able to operate under those parameters. The technologies in those programs require Microsoft Windows. Windows also already accommodates all of the UNIX system provisions so it isn’t needed for computers with Windows.

Windows vs Linux

Both Windows and Linux can support standard Cold Fusion, HTML and JavaScript files. Previously it was difficult to use Linux server for FrontPage extensions but now it is easy to do so. CGI and Perl platforms are though supported by Windows but Linux is commonly used for these. Linux commonly supports PHP while Windows support ASP.

The biggest advantage of Windows over Linux is that it runs all of the Microsoft software such as Access and can also create MS SQL database that is used by many hosts now. The Windows platform gives developers programming environments such as VBScripts (Visual Basic Scripts), Active Server Pages (ASP), and the Index capabilities of MS Index Server. Linux is not able to access those Microsoft features so if a use requires the use of MS SQL, ASP, OR VBScript as a method of development they must use Windows.

It is always better to study what the windows package has to offer. Not all packages offer the same facilities but whatever they offer has to be studied for better result and performances:

Some of the features of the Windows operating system are:

* .NET Support

ASP.net is considered to be the modern and latest offer of Microsoft’s Active Server Page. This is an integral part of the Internet Information Server or IIS. Web hosts generally combine all these features when they render their service. But at times charge additional fees.

* Databases

Most web hosts provide Microsoft Access 2000 database to their customers. If a business is run on a larger scale and would clog up that system too easily a host may require MS SQL in order to ensure the system continues without crashing.

* PHP and ColdFusion

ColdFusion is an advanced option and all web hosts do not provide this tool. Only some specialized websites require this.

* Control Panel

Control panel is the key stone of the arch. This can be used by the website owner to monitor and maintain his/her website.

Other options you might expect from your web hosting service that uses Windows are POP3 email, IDs and Aliases, Bandwidth, Backup, IP, Webmail, STMTPs, and FTP accounts, CDONTS and ASP support.

Windows operating systems will continue to be the most popular system for use by the most customers largely due to the fact they have come to expect seeing the familiar logo and associate it with a positive image. Microsoft has imprinted that image so heavily upon the minds of the general public they are often not willing to use other systems, or even try them out. Windows has been the most popular operating system since the early 80’s and will continue a strong customer loyalty thanks to its strong brand name presence. People are generally geared to believe that a Windows platform will be available for long periods in the future and won’t disappear.

Windows has a great support system for its users. This includes many free tutorials, and pages and pages of information as well as live and virtual technical support. That is just a part of what makes it so extremely popular amongst average people without technical backgrounds.
